Day 1 & 2: Boston, MA
Dear Diary: Boston is famous for everything from the Red Sox and Paul Revere to Cheers and clam “chowdah,” and we explored it thoroughly. Part history lesson, part modern metropolis, we found attractions to suit every taste and interest.
2 nights Boston

Day 3: To Mid Coast Maine (107 mi/171 km)
Dear Diary: This morning, we stopped to see HammondCastle in Gloucester. I has read about Mr. Hammond, and all his inventions, so it was great to see his home and laboratory! Then, we headed north to Maine. We stopped for our first
lobster roll in Ogunquit, a charming seaside village, before heading to Portland, where we visited the narrow guage railroad.

Day 4 & 5: To Bar Harbor Area , ME (162 mi/259 km)
Dear Diary: On the way to Bar Harbor, we spent some time in Camden, where we saw beautiful, historic schooners. Richard picked up some literature about overnight windjammer cruises, which sound like fun! Then, we were off to Bar Harbor. It’s on an island - Mount Desert Island, to be exact, and it is home to Acadia National Park, where we hiked and enjoyed the incredible Scenery. The village of Bar Harbor is lovely – full of shops and restaurants overlooking a postcard harbor!

Day 6: The CAT/Yarmouth, NS
Dear Diary: Today, we took a cruise on the “CAT,” the fastest car ferry in North America! We arrived in Yarmouth, NS and visited the Firefighters Museum of Nova Scotia, and the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives before we checked into our hotel.

Day 7 & 8: Lighthouse Trail/Lunenburg, NS (143 mi/240 km)
Dear Diary: On the Lighthouse Route, we traveled to Wedgeport, once known as the Sport Tuna Fishing Capital of the World. Then, we took a full day to enjoy the treasures of the Lunenburg area. In 1995, ‘Old Town’ Lunenburg was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Houses, businesses, churches and public buildings from the late 1700’s and early 1800’s are still being used today.

Day 9 & 10: Peggy’s Cove/Halifax, NS (61 mi/101 km)
Dear Diary: Today, we made a side trip to the New Ross Farm, a working farm museum, before continuing to Chester, a yachting mecca, and on to Peggy’s Cove. Here, we sent a postcard to Grandmother from Canada’s only operating post office in a lighthouse! Then, it was on to Halifax. This was the site of the first British town in Canada, founded in 1749. In the heart of the downtown we found art galleries, museums, historic sites and churches, shopping, sidewalk cafés and friendly nightclubs.
Lively pubs and livelier entertainment and a nightlife that doesn’t quit. Must-sees are the imposing Citadel, fascinating Pier 21, Canada’s “Ellis Island,” and the Botanical Gardens.
2 nights Halifax

Day 11: To Yarmouth/The CAT/Bangor, ME (189 mi/314km +ferry+48 mi/80km)
Dear Diary: Today, we returned to Yarmouth this morning to catch the “CAT” for our cruise back to Maine. On arrival, we traveled to Bangor, home of author Stephen King, for overnight.

Day 12 & 13: To White Mtns, NH (164 mi/262 km)
Dear Diary: Today, we shopped North Conway’s factory outlets, then journeyed along the Kancamagus Highway. In the White Mountains, we visited Franconia Notch, and picniced at the Flume Gorge. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram provided us with fabulous views.
2 nights White Mountains.

Day 14: To Boston/Home (130 mi/208 km)
Dear Diary: We returned to Boston today to catch our homeward flight. We made one last stop in Freeport, home to world-famous L.L. Bean, and in Kittery, ME’s outlets for last-minute shopping en route.
